“We Started with One Box of Apples” – How Our Contribution Has Grown

The story of the PFFood Fair is a story of how a small, seemingly insignificant act can be the start of a big movement that changes the lives of many people. It all started with a single box of fresh apples donated by local farmer James Harris in 2018. His gesture of goodwill inspired other farmers, volunteers, and Philadelphians to rally around the idea of helping those who lack quality food.

That first day, the fair was modest – a few outdoor tables, a dozen vendors and about a hundred attendees. But it was then that a community built on the desire to share and support was born. The box of apples became a symbol of the beginning that all participants remembered – it was the first real proof that you can do more together than you can do alone.

Each year, PFFood grew. By 2019, the number of farmers willing to donate their food tripled, and volunteers began helping not only with logistics, but also with organizing educational workshops and fun events. In 2020, despite the complexities of the pandemic, the fair adapted: new sanitation measures were introduced, online initiatives and food delivery to those in need. This helped to stay connected to the community and continue to help those in a particularly difficult situation.

Gradually, the amount of food collected grew: from tens of kilograms in the first year to several tons in recent years. Moreover, the fair became a platform for cooperation with charitable organizations, food banks and social services, which made it possible to channel aid to target groups as efficiently as possible.

But PFFood is not just about numbers and logistics. It is, above all, about people’s stories. Stories of farmers who see how their products help families in difficult situations. Stories of volunteers who find new meanings and friends in the work of the fair. Stories of beneficiaries who are thankful for the opportunity to feed their children with fresh and healthy food.

Today, the PFFood Fair is a large-scale event with hundreds of vendors and volunteers, thousands of kilograms of collected food and thousands of grateful families. But each of us remembers that first box of apples, which was the beginning of a great and important journey.

We continue to invite new people and organizations to participate because every contribution counts – whether it’s one box of apples or a ton of food. Together, we are creating a community that leaves no one behind, where kindness and caring become a key ingredient in Philadelphia life.
